A small robot was used last Friday (April 10) to film inside one of the reactors that melted down at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant but it lost control and become unconnected.
Four years ago, a quake and subsequent tsunami wrecked the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and led to the meltdown of a number of its reactors, leading to mass evacuations in the surrounding area.
Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power company (Tepco) used the small cable-operated robot called the “investigation device crawler” on Friday to film inside reactor number one.
The robot successfully delivered footage back outside, but became unable to move by the afternoon.
The robot was exposed to levels of up to nearly 10 sieverts per hour.
A legal dose for a human according to the United States Regulatory Commission is 4 to 5 sieverts in a very short time period.
On Monday (April 13), Tepco decided to cut the wire to the robot and leave it in inside the contaminated reactor.
Tepco has one more of the same type of robot that they are looking into using to send into the reactor via another route.
